Most Expensive Latte in Queensland … So Far

That’s Right I’ve Just Had My Most Expensive Latte

I had no idea I was about to have the most expensive latte. I arrived at the cafe early, so ordered a double-shot latte while I waited for my friend Carolyn.

As I had no idea about whether these are usually served in glasses, cups or mugs, I had a conversation with the lovely young lady with purple hair.

I could see my usual type of latte glasses on a shelf behind her, but when I asked for one, I was told they never serve a latte in a glass. A second staff member came over and said emphatically, “Never. We never serve coffee in glasses.”

So I asked to see what they usually serve them in, they pointed to a capuccino style of thick coffee cup, or a slightly taller thick coffee mug, neither of which I liked.

They had 3 sizes of takeaway paper cups on the counter, with prices marked on them, and the smallest one was going to have to be my choice.

Single Shot Latte Prices on the Menu:

  1. coffee cup $5.05!
  2. coffee mug $5.60!

It seemed that ALL drinks served in these 2 sizes were the same.

  • When my friend ordered a cup of tea, it came with a pot and milk, and was $5.20! It’s just a teabag and hot water …

Gosh, most expensive I’ve seen so far.

  • So I ordered the SMALL PAPER CUP, tiniest I’ve ever seen!

A double shot latte in a teeeny tiny paper cup cost $5.74

Holy moley! Such a shock!

I mentioned this was the most I’ve ever paid for a latte, and the older staff member said, “You’re paying for an extra shot!”

I replied with a smile, “For the past 20 years, I ALWAYS ordered a double shot :-)”

The lady replied with, “All cafes charge the same prices for coffee.”

To which I very kindly replied, “No, they don’t :-) I’ve been drinking double-shot lattes for years in cafes, and THIS is the most expensive I have had so far – I am not criticising, I am just making a comment :-)”

I sat at a table with a view of the water, and had a sip – it tasted quite good, but it was only about a third the amount of any small latte I’ve ever had.

  • There was only enough liquid for a couple of mouthfuls, so I was very disappointed.

When my friend arrived, we ordered lunch and were looking forward to it.

I ordered the “Bacon & Eggs Your Way” for $20 (did not know there was a surcharge on every purchase, so it cost $21.35), which consisted of:

Bacon and eggs at Baaia

  • 2 small eggs
  • “artisan toast” (this sadly was unbelievable!) was very small piece of toast approximately 1.5″ x 3″ – definitely not a “slice of toast”
  • instead of “hash browns”, one hash brown had been cut into mini triangles about 1″ on each side. So maybe 6 cut out of one hash brown. I was served only 2 tiny triangle pieces of hash brown; if pushed against each other, it was a square 1″x1″ (2.5cm x 2.5cm)
  • the bacon was one very small slice folded in 3
  • the chilli jam was sweet chilli sauce smeared over the other half of the plate (to make it look full perhaps?)
  • all in all, a very small serving of food, definitely not worth $20.00 – more like $5 to $7.

  • Cafe/Restaurant name: BAAIA
  • Will I go there again? No.
  • Baaia Review: 👎
  • Value for money? IMHO, no.
  • Stars out of 5? ⭐️ ⭐️
  • Staff: were pleasant.
  • Locale: across from the bay, tables and free barbeques under the trees, beautiful spot.

My friend and I agreed to come back here – but no – NOT to Baaia – to the fish and chip cafe next door, Sandgate Fishmonger where we went next to have an actual lunch, greeted and served by wonderful friendldy staff, excellent food – quality AND quantity:-)

As I was leaving I spoke to two ladies outside that Sandgate Fishmonge cafe,. They said the servings are very good and delicious. Can’t agree more! We’ll be back!
